Gipsy Hill Hotel

Gipsy Hill Hotel
Gipsy Hill Lane, Exeter EX1 3RN
This was a truly last minute overnight stay. Planning a journey between Essex and Cornwall we had booked in to the Exeter Airport Hampton Inn, but arrived at 5.30pm to discover I'd mistyped the booking so we were expected in July not June and the hotel was completely full! A quick search on Google for nearby accommodation, brought up the Gipsy Hill Hotel, which thankfully had a vacancy. Even with a sat nav the entrance is quite difficult to find, as the motorway has cut off the natural access, so you have to negotiate about 4 miles of country lanes and industrial estates to reach the hotel from the motorway junction, when it's only a few hundred yards as the crow flies. This was evidently a large country house at one time, and still retains some of the features. In particular the large landscaped garden, of which only a relatively small area is used at the side of the building for car parking. The rooms are pleasingly non uniform too. I was disappointed that our room appeared to have a balcony, but no way of using it. The en-suite bathroom was cramped - but with our last minute booking this would have been the last room sold. Breakfast was made to order and therefore very good; it was produced promptly too so we could continue our journey without a long delay.
We will make Gipsy Hill our first choice next time we need to stay in the area.
