Magpie Inn

Magpie Inn
Norwich Road, Stonham Parva, Suffolk IP14 5JY

En route between Chelmsford and Norfolk we were watching out for somewhere nice to have a bite of lunch as it was well after 1pm and a lot of places stop serving at two. The Magpie, with its pub sign actually across the road and its "Lunches now being served notice" looked perfect. Three tables had diners when we arrived - a couple leaving, a couple eating and a party of 4 waiting for their meal; and a glance at the menu, which offered Lithuanian specials sealed it!
Neither of us were terribly hungry, having had a good breakfast and anticipating a substantial evening meal, so I chose a starter of Scallops at 7.00 consisting of scallops, black pudding and fried apple rounds with cranberry sauce drizzled over. Nick ordered the Mexican soup which came with bread notionally a main course. However, it arrived before my scallops, and after a few minutes with no sign of my food, I suggested he ate his before it got cold. It was just as well, because after about 10 minutes the waitress came over and said there would be a small delay with mine. I considered the time spent already, during which Nick had finished his soup, was itself the small delay, but we waited, and Nick fetched his computer to get on with some work! A full 3/4 hour after Nick had been served my scallops arrived! They were, however, delicious.
I drank half of Aspalls, Nick, a Becks Blue. Lunch was good value at 15.35 and sufficient but the timing was a disaster! The waitress/owner was really apologetic (but still charged us) explaining that the chef had thrown the largest tantrum ever and would be replaced as soon as possible. I hope she succeeds!
