Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
708 Jesmond Rd, Fig Tree Pocket QLD 4069, Australia

A long standing if fairly modest zoo about half an hour's drive out of central Brisbane - we took only 2 hours to see everything, but with lots and lots of koalas. We had been told koalas suffer from serious body odour, so declined the opportunity to hold one since we had to share a row of aeroplane seats later in the day. However, I think our informant maligned them as I didn't think the smell was any worse than that of most zoo animals. Whilst the Lone Pine does rescue injured or orphaned koalas, most of the several hundred animals have been bred and spent their whole lives in captivity. Koalas in such conditions generally live longer than those in the wild, so the koala enclosures were populated by age, culminating with a "retirement home" for the oldest animals, who were fed especially young eucalyptus shoots which were softer on their mouths and more easily digested. (it still takes many hours for a koala to digest the average 1/2kg of leaves eaten daily, hence the necessity to sleep for about 18 hours of every 24!)
Other enclosures housed Tasmanian devils, dingos, wombats, and a highlight for children was the compound where you could feed kangaroos by hand.
Adult admission (2017) $36.

There are two cafes for simple refreshments, the Sleepy Koala cafe in the centre of the sanctuary, and the Riverside cafe which is actually on the riverside and usefully between the car park and the sanctuary entrance. Cafe is a rather grandiose term - there is a large area of seating on decking, nicely divided up with trees and sunshades but the food is supplied from a van. As well as drinks, ice creams and sandwiches there are a few hot items served with salad available. I had quiche and Nick had a mini lasagne. Both appeared to be home made originally and microwaved at the van but quite acceptable.
Our visit would have been pleasanter had it not been raining.
