Lake Balaton Car Ferry

Lake Balaton Car Ferry
Exploring the northern shore of Lake Balaton, we were approaching the turning to Tihany in a thunderstorm and decided it was time to head back to Budapest. We were on a pretty large road, so expected the navigator to instruct us to continue beyond the end of the lake and pick up an arterial road radiating from Budapest. But no, it told us to take the small road to Tihany and then the car ferry across the lake, presumably to join the M7 a little further on. So, after sitting out the storm in Tihany, with trepidation we followed the instructions. It proved to be really easy! Good signposting, ticket prices in English as well as Hungarian and an almost continuous service made it really efficient. My only small grumble was the cost. Prices for foot passengers were given and various prices for vehicles, so I expected to pay the car rate. However, car passengers including the driver were also charged the foot passenger fee. Not exorbitant, but even the cross channel ferries include the driver with the car. Of course, all that may change....
The sun had come out by the time we were on board so we took advantage of the raised passenger platform and enjoyed the excellent views up and down the 50 mile long lake for the whole of the 10 minute crossing.
