The Big Wok
5 Wrottesley St, Birmingham B5 4RT, UK
About 9.45 on a Friday night we expected to find more choice of eating places open in central Birmingham. There were plenty of bars, and nightclubs just getting going but few restaurants accepting new customers even in Chinatown. The Big Wok buffet was listed as being open until 10.30pm, and on entering we were told that we could help ourselves from the buffet until 10.20, then continue to eat. This seemed fair as we were hungry and didn’t plan to have a slow meal.
In the event several more people arrived just after us and the time limit was revised!
The “Grand Buffet” served in the evening at £12.95 per head is very good value. It included all the usual starters and mains with several unusual dishes such as deep fried prawns which were excellent. There was also a Teppanyaki bar where you made up a plate of raw ingredients and sauce and the chef stir fried it all for you. This is a very good plan if you are wary about the turnover of the dishes being kept hot, although the Big Wok staff seemed quite diligent in checking the times on dishes.
We didn’t get as far as dessert, but there were ice cream, cakes and mousse dishes as well as fruit fritters to finish your meal.
