AA 2* hotel providing 20 of Mansfield's very few hotel rooms. Its brochure and website do not mention being family run, but the receptionist is the daughter of one of the waitresses, and all the staff are really friendly. This is just the thing when you find yourself staying alone in a hotel. The rooms have obviously been recently refurbished to make them all en-suite with the result that when space ran short, room 219 was converted into a sauna and shower room! This is available to guests free (with only 20 minutes advance notice – it heats up efficiently), but the facility seems little taken advantage of.
There is a small lounge bar and a 25 seat dining room with a much larger function room, which was well utilised the whole weekend I stayed.
The food is nicely presented and portions are generous. The weekend table d'hote menu at £13.95 was very good value. Nick selected breaded garlic mushrooms to start, and whilst the actual mushrooms looked suspiciously like packeted, the garlic mayonnaise looked and tasted home assembled. My smoked salmon salad was served simply with lemon but on request, a jug of French dressing was rapidly supplied.
For main course, Nick's chicken Korma with boiled rice and puppadums was certainly home made, being a mild but tasty curry although bearing almost no resemblance to Korma. Taking his advice on portion size, I declined the other main course choices of pork cutlets in red wine sauce and steak garni, opting instead for another starter, the carrot and coriander soup. This had a lovely home made texture and was served with rolls. It also had the advantage of leaving me enough room to try a dessert. My lemon tart with cream was very good although the swirls of raspberry puree in the cream tended to override rather than complement the lemon.
Nick's treacle tart was very rich and came in a standard portion size even though he had requested a very small slice. The whole piece soon disappeared however!
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who has occasion to stay in Mansfield, as it seems to possess the friendliness of a small hotel without the claustrophobic attention of most guest houses.
B&B £60 double for sole use week nights, cheaper at weekends.
Observed in passing it has been revamped as "281 Restaurant with Rooms".
