This claims to be Bath's "Country Hotel". It certainly is that, for although being only just over 5 miles out of town, commuting along the A36 makes it a good 20 minutes away.

A traditional country house hotel with rooms of different sizes and shapes, upgraded with en-suites with varying degrees of success. We were in room 25, a spacious bay windowed second floor room a long way from the lift, and overlooking the driveway. It had enough cupboard space for a long weekend's worth of clothes, but the radiator took a while to keep up with January temperatures - I think it had been turned on only slightly before we arrived.

You also spent an inordinately long time opening and closing the 5 sets of curtains at the bay window. Even with the curtains closed at night the floodlight outside managed to find the gaps, and totally precluded seeing the night sky.

The buffet breakfast with kippers and other specials available on request, was fairly standard, and satisfactory. However, evening meals were a challenge. You could choose from the set price menu (half a dozen choices for each course) with one, two or all three courses; or from an extensive bar menu- or mix and match; and could eat from either menu in the bar, the lounge or the restaurant. This was fine in theory, but the bar and lounge tables were unsuited to formal meals as there was nowhere to put your legs. To complicate matters further, one evening a wedding took up most of the ground floor so we were led to an upstairs conference room, turned temporarily into a restaurant ( Mussels picture). On a second evening the restaurant and lounge had been set up for a "Wedding Fayre" the following day so we had to eat in the bar. I got the feeling that normal guests play second fiddle to functions! The food itself was very good indeed. The duck in plum sauce featured real sliced plums (picture in main restaurant), the lamb was cooked exactly as requested, and the mushroom mornay starter was out of this world!
