My Sister's Keeper

Jodi Picoult

RecommendationPfftrevious books

Another typical Jodi Picoult story involving a conflict of interest; this time between two sisters of whom the younger has been conceived to be a genetic match to her sick elder sister so she can provide blood and bone marrow transplants. The crunch comes when both sisters are in their teens and Anna is asked to donate a kidney to her sister. There is no guarantee it will succeed in saving Kate's life, and Anna finds a lawyer to issue an injunction to prevent her parents forcing her to donate. As usual the story is narrated by several characters, causing the reader's sympathies to alternate between them. Whilst this concept of genetic engineering provides an exciting scenario in a novel, it also acts as a warning of the ethical problems that "designer babies" could produce.
