Lord Haldon Country House Hotel

Dunchideock, Exeter EX6 7YFDevon

This hotel looks deceptively close to the end of the motorway. It might be 2 miles as the crow flies but felt like at least seven along Devon country lanes! Set in what is left of what had been a magnificent country mansion, it is a popular wedding venue. We therefore felt obliged to make a prompt departure on Saturday morning! Apart from being miles from anywhere (Dunchideock is not a village with a defined centre) it is a very good place to stay. The staff were helpful, and the general ambiance is pleasant. We would have liked to explore the grounds; the old drive is 1/4 mile long and there are longer walks to be made too. However the wind was bitter and seriously unconducive to such activities.

We ate dinner in the restaurant - Thai green vegetable curry for me and crab and prawn linguine for Nick, both of which featured on the more limited bar menu. Both were very flavourful without being too spicy, and we even had enough room to share a chocolate brownie with clotted cream! Recommended for a one night stay.
