We needed to be in London at a sufficiently early hour to make it unpleasantly early to set off from home, so looked up possible places to stay en route. We ended up in Huntingdon with a plan to catch up with a friend in Peterborough and thus kill two birds with one stone. Both figurative birds actually remained vigorously alive - another story, so here is a review to redeem our evening!

The major advantage of this hotel is its convenient location on the A14 just outside Huntingdon, a feature shared by the Holiday Inn near the Racecourse. However like most "motorway junction" hotels there are no restaurants within walking distance so you have to use the hotel. We had stayed here once before when it was under the Ramada brand, and unfortunately the rooms have not been updated to the same extent as the public and function rooms.

We had booked using booking.com and asked for a double room with one bed. Unfortunately the booking.com website was misbehaving and it had defaulted to requesting a twin room. As the hotel was full, it being a midweek night, and we were late checking in (7.30pm), this couldn't be changed. However, when we got to our room, we found that the twin beds were each a standard double, so no problem after all.

There was a problem on checking out though. I checked the bill and found that a 12.5% service charge had been added to our food bill in the bar (link) - including on the generous tip we had given. This was removed when I complained, but it still rankled as there was no indication that this would be done when we were actually eating.

We paid £113 for room only, so it is an expensive overnight stop.
