Woodbridge Meadows, Guildford, UK
The nearest hotel to a friend's birthday party venue, we selected this entirely on its location. The room was Travelodge basic but a large card explained the lack of facilities (no biscuits with room tray, one set of towels, no bathmat, no shampoo etc) by saying people preferred a cheap, no frills hotel to a more expensive one with “comforts”. The problem was that, falling within the London pricing region it was not cheap either, even for a weekend night. The situation was redeemed when I went on my usual quest for additional teabags and fresh milk to go with them. The receptionist readily provided both, together with the necessary extra towels for a double room occupancy. Towards midnight, after the party, I ventured back to reception for more milk for a late drink. This time the night porter presented me with a whole pint carton without comment! Our window could be opened (if you don't mind the traffic noise) and the bed was comfy, so our stay was better than expected from first impressions. We were even able to park free in the hotel car park on the ground floor of its tower, but suspect parking spaces would be inadequate on a busier night.
