One of a small group of predominantly East Anglian hotels, the 3* Elizabeth at Copdock is a very useful find, being situated on the old London Road just off the current A12, convenient for both Ipswich and other Suffolk and east Essex locations. A Sunday night late room deal of £39.50 for B&B for two was a real bargain, with a proper full English buffet breakfast included. The normal rate for an en-suite room, sleeping one, two or three is £79, itself not excessive for more than one.
The room itself was comfortably spacious with a fine view of the walled garden, and ironically, because we didn't have any large suitcases, we were given a ground floor room. The bathroom was rather cramped but the toiletries provided were very stylish.
The hotel boasts a leisure suite, and although the small gym looked well equipped, the pool was not long or wide enough to require a stroke in either direction. The information said there was a jet stream to swim against, but if there was, the mechanism was far from obvious. The spa immediately adjacent to the pool was pleasantly warm, and activated by a button on a nearby pillar, but the water jets were activated on only one side of the spa making for a rather asymmetric experience. The other downside was that there was a sauna cabin in each of the changing rooms rather than a communal one, and the changing rooms themselves left something to be desired, with rather tatty showers and no soap of any description on offer. However the leisure suite was open from 7am to 9pm daily and towels were provided at reception.
